Newcastle on Friday completed the four-million-pound signing of former Bolton captain Kevin Nolan.

Nolan, 26, has signed a four-and-a-half year contract and goes straight into the squad for Sunday’s northeast derby clash with Sunderland.

Once tipped to become an England international, Nolan has gone off the boil over the last year and felt he needed a fresh challenge to revitalise his career.

He said he would relish the prospect of a derby debut.

“It’s a massive game to come into and hopefully one in which we can get the win and start getting away from that relegation zone.”

Nolan represents manager Joe Kinnear’s second breakthrough in the transfer market in the wake of Danish winger Peter Lovenkrands’ arrival last week.
