Germany star Mesut Oezil expects Denmark to take a defensive approach to Sunday’s crunch match between the two teams at Euro 2012.
Denmark head into their last Group B match level on points with Portugal – following Wednesday’s 3-2 defeat against their rivals – knowing a draw will confirm their qualification to the quarter-finals.
And Oezil said the Danes will prove a stern test as Germany look to settle their own fate in the tournament.
“It will be a difficult game but if we play to our potential we can beat them as well,” he told DFB.de.
“It was apparent that the Dutch and Portuguese wanted to take me out of the game, but I am happy with my performances so far. I know I can do better and will prove it in the next game.
“Portugal were very defensive; they defended with eight, nine men at times and Denmark will set up similarly.
“That can be difficult for us but we have the potential and ability to break through that like we showed in the last two games.”
The Real Madrid ace offered his backing to compatriot Mario Gomez, who came under fire before the start of Euro 2012 before notching three goals in two games at the tournament.
“I can relate to that,” Oezil said.
“At Real Madrid the pressure is great, no matter how you play.
“I cannot understand the criticism of Mario. He is always motivated, always wants to help the team and showed against Netherlands what he can do.”
