Tahiti ended their winless run in Oceania World Cup qualifying with a 2-0 victory over Solomon Islands.

Eddy Etaeta’s men had failed to pick up a single point in four games prior to Saturday’s encounter but goals from Steevy Chong Hue and Nicolas Vallar restored some pride for the minnows.

With top spot already sewn up by New Zealand following their dramatic 2-1 triumph at home to New Caledonia on Friday, there was little at stake for both sides.

But having lost to Solomon Islands in the reverse fixture last year, Tahiti were keen to exact revenge and they made an ideal start when Chong Hue found the back of the net inside 28 minutes.

The game remained in the balance throughout but attacking midfielder Vallar secured the points with eight minutes to play.

The win moves Tahiti level on points with Solomon Islands at the foot of the group, with one fixture remaining for both sides.

Solomon Islands play host to New Zealand in their final game at Lawson Tama Stadium on Tuesday, while Tahiti travel to second-placed New Caledonia.
