New Western Sydney Wanderers marquee man Shinji Ono has declared himself fit to start for his new club in their inaugural A-League match.
The veteran Japanese midfielder landed in Sydney on Monday morning local time, having signed with the fledgling A-League club on Friday to be their first-ever marquee player.
The 33-year-old, who has 56 international caps to his name and represented his country at three World Cup tournaments, was greeted by Wanderers fans at Sydney International Airport.
The Wanderers take on the Central Coast Mariners at Parramatta Stadium on Saturday in the opening week of the 2012-13 A-League season, with the former Feyenoord and Vfl Bochum man declaring himself ready to start for his new side.
But he said the final decision lies with coach Tony Popovic, with Ono having seen no competition action with previous club Shimizu S-Pulse since their J.League match against Yokohama F. Marinos on July 28.
“It feels so nice (that) a lot of people welcome to me,” Ono said upon his arrival in Sydney.
“They sing a song about me … Unbelievable. I want to give my everything, my energy for the team.”
