Owen backs Moyes appointment

Former Manchester United striker Michael Owen feels David Moyes is the right man to lead the club in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era.

Moyes was announced as Ferguson’s replacement in May, when the revered tactician chose to retire following almost 27 years in charge.

Despite the momentous task of trying to follow Ferguson’s trophy-laden time at Old Trafford, Owen feels Moyes is more than capable of living with the burden of expectation.

“I think everyone would agree it’s a great appointment,” Owen said.

“It’s just in keeping with what Manchester United are about really, but that’s not to say everything will continue (as it is).

“He’s brought in a new backroom staff, brought in a couple of ex and current players, so that there’s still that feel for the club within the management team, and he’s brought in his own staff as well.

“Everyone’s going to be waiting eagle-eyed to see what happens, and (see if they can) continue the same kind of dominance they’ve had for the past 25 years under Sir Alex.”

And Owen said the United faithful may have to be patient with the 50-year-old boss as he tries to put his own stamp on the iconic club.

“No matter who comes in it’s going to be a massive upheaval,” Owen said.

“Obviously if there’s a continuation of it (success) that’s the ideal for David Moyes and for Manchester United, and there’s a strong possibility that will happen.

“They’ve certainly got great players, and you’d have to think they’ll be up there fighting for it regardless of who the manager is.

“As it happens David Moyes has had a great career so far, done wonders at Everton, and you’d think he has all the attributes to take over at Manchester United.”

Owen also weighed in on his old side Liverpool, and said he feels the Merseyside giants must do everything in their power to retain the services of unsettled Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez.

“I think it’s vital to keep hold of him,” Owen said. “You ask most Liverpool fans and they’ll say it’s important that they keep him.

“It’s always worrying, his agent came out today and made a few waves about him potentially leaving.

“That’s got to be a worry as he’s proven over the last year or two that he can score, and plenty of them.

“He’s a world class player, he does so much for the team, bringing other players into play, he can play up front on his own or with someone.

“He’s a genuine world class player so it’s vital Liverpool keep hold of him.”
