Nacional Asuncion continued their dominance in the Paraguay Division Profesional on Sunday, but their win over Olimpia did not come easy.
The runaway league leaders chalked up their 14th win in 16 matches with a 3-2 win away from home, but the points were only sealed courtesy of an 85th-minute own-goal from Olimpia midfielder Carlos Paredes.
Earlier, Enzo Prono put Olimpia ahead just past the hour mark at the Estadio Defensores del Chaco, only for Nacional to ruthlessly wrench the lead out of their opponents’ hands.
Marcos Riveros and Silvio Torales struck goals two minutes apart prior to the hour mark, but Prono gave his side hope with his second goal with 15 minutes to play.
But Olimpia hearts were broken when Paredes got the final touch into his own net, to make it eight straight wins for Gustavo Morinigo’s men.
Cerro Porteno are second, 14 points adrift of the league leaders, but chalked up their fifth consecutive victory with a 2-0 away win over Deportivo Capiata on Saturday.
They moved clear of third-placed Guarani with the victory, who were held to a 1-1 draw away to General Diaz on Sunday.
Elsewhere, Libertad consolidated fourth spot with a 2-0 home win over Deportivo Carapegua.
Sportivo Luqueno earned just their second win of the season with a 1-0 result over Rubio Nu, although they remain rooted to the bottom of the table.
Finally, Cerro Porteno PF were held to a 1-1 stalemate at home to Sol de America.
