Pearce: Championship will not hold back McCarthy

Stuart Peace does not feel Reading goalkeeper Alex McCarthy needs a move to the Premier League for an international call-up.

McCarthy’s impressive form this season has seen him included in Roy Hodgson’s England squad for the friendly games against the Republic of Ireland and Brazil – and Pearce feels the status of his club is not an issue.
Indeed, Pearce feels the only thing the stopper needs to worry about is making sure he gets regular first-team football.
“I just think he needs to be playing. If he is playing Roy will look at him,” Pearce said.
“You hear some people talking about how players from fashionable clubs only get the opportunity (at international level), but he has proven that idea wrong. If you are playing well enough you will get the opportunity no matter where you are.
“He is in the England squad now so that tells you something straight away – he wouldn’t be in the England squad if Roy didn’t trust him.”
The 23-year-old has enjoyed an impressive rise up the leagues and has made 13 top-flight appearances for Reading this season, despite not being a regular at the start of the campaign.
