Barcelona attacker Pedro has revealed he feared he would not make Spain’s squad for Euro 2012.
Vicente del Bosque had given a strong indication that he would leave the Barca forward out of his plans for Poland and Ukraine, but included the 24-year-old in the squad following his impressive display in the Copa del Rey final against Athletic Bilbao.
“I saw myself out of the European Championship, because of the season that I had,” he told reporters at a press conference.
“I had many injuries, it was hard for me to make Barca’s team and I saw myself out of the squad.
“But in the end things went well, especially in the Copa del Rey final, and Del Bosque decided to trust me.
“And here I am to try to help in every way I can.”
Looking ahead to Spain’s first contest against Italy, Pedro said that although his side are favourites for the tournament, they would not be underestimating anybody.
“We have always had pressure because we have the best players in the world,” he said.
“It is clear that we are favourites, but there are great teams, starting with Italy, who will surely make things hard for us.
“The path towards the title is long and complicated. We have to go step by step and we hope that we can win.”
