Pellegrino takes blame for Valencia woes

Valencia coach Mauricio Pellegrino has blamed himself for his side’s poor start to the season.

The 41-year-old was only installed in the hotseat in May but has already come under fire just months into his reign at Mestalla, with Valencia sitting 14th in La Liga after seven games.

Despite that, Pellegrino has stressed his continued love affair with the game and promised to do everything he can to turn the club’s fortunes around.

“I am giving this job my all,” he told EFE. “Football is all I have thought about my entire life, and I have devoted all my time and love to this game.

“I am doing the best I can, but I can certainly do more to live up to the expectations of the club.

“I do not think we deserved to lose some of the games we have, but I will not give any excuses. I hope, with the work of the players and myself, the situation will change.”

Pellegrino also believes that the international fixtures will only make things harder for Valencia due to the large number of players away on international duty.

“Valencia has a lot of internationals, and this issue is not an easy one for any coach,” he said.

“(Once the players return) I will only have two days before travelling and preparing for the match against Athletic Bilbao, and then just one day before travelling to Belarus.

“But these are the problems of modern football.”
