Petkovic satisfied with Pescara triumph

Lazio coach Vladimir Petkovic was delighted his side was able to win convincingly against lowly Pescara in Serie A on Monday.

Petkovic’s men moved back into third spot on the table to occupy the Champions League qualification places, with a 2-0 win at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.

Stefan Radu and Senad Lulic were both on target six minutes apart in the first half, and the capital city club never looked like dropping the points against their relegation-threatened opponents.

Petkovic was satisfied his side could do what was expected of them, dismissing the lower-ranked side with ease.

“It was very important to win tonight and gain these three points and we did it without having too many difficulties, without risking too much,” the Bosnian-born tactician said.

“We managed the game very well tonight, especially after taking a two-goal lead and I’m very satisfied with the team’s performance.

“We will now take the chance to rest up before we have to focus on next challenge. Our next game against Milan will be even more difficult and we still need to improve in all the departments but tonight was very pleasing for me.”

Milan are two points back from Lazio in fourth spot, but if Petkovic was concerned about losing a top-three berth and potential Champions League spot, he was not showing it.

“It was important to win and put in a convincing performance tonight as we look to finish well. Six or seven teams are fighting for the top positions and it will be close until the end of the season,” he said.

“Every team will fight for every point and, if possible, we will try not to lose the third place we now have.

“We will try to gain as many points as we can to reach the top, starting from our next game in Milan.”

French defender Abdoulay Konko was substituted after just six minutes on Monday, and Petkovic confirmed the full back would miss at least a month with knee ligament damage.

“As far as Konko is concerned we are not sure yet, but it looks as if it might be serious,” he said.

“We believe it’s an injury to the collateral ligaments, hopefully nothing serious and nothing broken, but we will definitely lose him for several games.

“It’s a pity because we haven’t been very lucky with injuries this season and this has affected our chances to win the title.

“We need to remain positive and believe in any player who can help us, as was the case tonight, when everyone was important and I’m more than certain that everyone will be important until the end.”
