Mauricio Pochettino was elated to provide Tottenham fans with a memorable and “emotional” 2-0 win over Arsenal in the final North London derby to take place at White Hart Lane before a new stadium is built at the same venue, but is targeting bigger things for the club in the future.

Spurs were dominant against Arsene Wenger’s men on Sunday as Dele Alli’s goal and a Harry Kane penalty did the damage for the home side in the second half.

The result leaves Spurs 17 points ahead of the Gunners, guaranteeing that they will finish above Arsenal for the first time since 1995.

Pochettino was understandably beaming, but he was eager to insist that beating Arsenal is going to become a minor target in Spurs’ future seasons at their new stadium.

“It was a fantastic afternoon,” Pochettino told Sky Sports. “I’m very happy for the players and the fans.

“To win against Arsenal in the last derby at White Hart Lane, it was emotional for everyone.

“We tried to pay the supporters back for the energy they gave us. But the most important thing was to keep the gap with Chelsea.

“We have to keep focussing on our game and now we can say that we are more mature than last season. Today was another chance to see the team learning and improving.

“I can understand our fans being excited about finishing above Arsenal, but I don’t feel the same because for me it is about trying to win the title.

“It is so important now to try and win trophies, that is our aim. I think still we are in the race. It’s true that it will be difficult but we will see what happens.”
