Pochettino: Sky is the limit for Southampton

SoccerNews in English Premier League 19 Oct 2013

Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino believes “the sky is the limit” for his side following their 1-1 draw with Manchester United.

Pochettino’s side secured a point with a scrappy 89th-minute goal from Adam Lallana at Old Trafford, after falling behind in the 26th minute to a goal from Robin van Persie, the first Southampton had conceded in six matches.

After the game, the Argentinian insisted his side are determined to continue their current good run of form for as long as possible.

“It’s a very positive run that we’re on at the moment and the sky is the limit,” he said.

“We want to take each game as it comes and finish as high as we can.

“Winning at Anfield and drawing here today is amazing for this club. It certifies the quality of this project and how we want to move forward and it gives the younger players belief that they can go on and do amazing things.

“I think my team were very brave and it was an amazing effort against United at their home ground.

“That’s never easy so I want to congratulate my players for an amazing afternoon.

“We had a very good second half; it’s normal that they would push for a second but we kept on believing in our philosophy and at the end we were pushing for the win.”

Pochettino left striker Rickie Lambert on the bench ahead of the game, the England international replacing Jay Rodriguez after 55 minutes, and was happy to explain the reasons behind his decision.

“He was left out because we have two very good strikers in Lambert and Pablo Osvaldo,” he said.

“The thinking today was to fill the middle of the pitch with people who can keep possession of the ball for us and we needed to be quick on the flanks with Rodriguez and Lallana.

“The important thing is the team has fully understood and they know how we want to play. We press very high up the pitch and that’s working out well for us.

“Today Lambert started on the bench but on another day he could be starting, he’s a very important player for us and he’s done very well for us.”
