Western Sydney Wanderers defender Jerome Polenz has extended his contract with the A-League newcomers until the end of the 2013/14 season.

The 26-year-old German becomes the Wanderers’ sixth re-signing in the past 10 days following a stunning debut season under coach Tony Popovic, who is on track to guide the club to a maiden finals campaign.

Polenz, who followed in footsteps of Johnny Warren medalist and countryman Thomas Broich by arriving in Australia to ply his trade, said the Wanderers’ passionate fans and their standing of third on the table combined to make it an easy decision to sign on.

“I really didn’t have an option because it is so beautiful here and I really want to stay here,” Polenz said.

“The club is a kind of tribe and I love playing at Parramatta Stadium and the fans have been so great.

“The whole club is a tight unit and everybody is pulling together and it is going very well. Everybody is doing a great job and it is a lot of fun to be part of it.”

Polenz revealed he had made the decision to leave his native Berlin after seeing a documentary on Brisbane Roar star Broich.

“It is amazing back home because they just ran a big feature on me in German papers and all of my friends and family keep hearing about us here,” he said.

“Other footballers are calling me from back home and asking me about football down here and about the league.”

Popovic was excited to have secured the German’s services for another season as part of the club’s watertight defence, which has conceded only 11 goals in 14 games.

“Jerome is a very important member of this football club and he is very professional in his approach,” Popovic said.

“With his European background he knows what is required on and off the field and we are very pleased he has signed again with us.”

Polenz joins Michael Beauchamp, Adam D’Apuzzo, Shannon Cole, goalkeeper Ante Covic and Mateo Poljak as the others to have signed extensions.
