Italy coach Cesare Prandelli is hoping Stephan El Shaarawy and Mario Balotelli playing together at club level will improve the national side.

Prandelli said Balotelli’s move to AC Milan could prove positive for his side, and said the young national team will improve after their 1-1 draw with the Netherlands on Wednesday.

The 55-year-old said he hoped AC Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri would help nurture the pair’s partnership.

“I will be relying heavily on Massimiliano Allegri as he works with Mario Balotelli and Stephan El Shaarawy,” Prandelli told ANSA.

“The renewal of this team is slow but we will do great things.

“We must renew this squad and we are certainly on the right track. We have great potential, and that’s exciting.”

Italy needed a late goal from Marco Verratti to salvage a draw against the Netherlands, and Prandelli believes his team can benefit from guidance from their club coaches.

Prandelli picked out particular admiration for Paris Saint-Germain boss Carlo Ancelotti and his influence on Verratti.

“Verratti has the good fortune to work with Carlo Ancelotti who is one of the best coaches in the world,” he said.

“With him, Marco can become a great player.”
