Premier League – Who’s Hot and Who’s Not?

Who's Hot and Who's Not?

Who's Hot and Who's Not?

  • Hot team
  • In any other week Everton would have won this award. They put in a quite magnificent display in their 2-0 win over Manchester City. David Moyes continues to do a remarkable job at Goodison Park and they have well and truly turned the corner after their terrible start to the season.

Unfortunately for Everton they don’t win the award this week because of a certain Chelsea team. They gave a master-class in how to play football on saturday in their 7-2 win over Sunderland. For all the reasons why they should win the award this week please the article about them yesterday.

  • Not Hot team
  • I’m afraid this has to go to Sunderland. They are in a dangerous slump at the moment and although their are definitely at least three teams worse than them in the league they do need to start picking up some points.

On saturday they were just completely out-classed by Chelsea and whilst I think almost any team would have been, they have to get this award.

  • Hot keeper
  • Hull’s Boaz Myhill had one of those games at Tottenham on saturday whereby if they were still playing now, he wouldn’t have conceeded a goal! He made at least four world class saves and threw in another four or five very good ones.

If ever a player has earned his team a point almost entirely by himself this was the perfect example. He was outstanding and produced one of the best displays of goalkeeping I have seen in many years.

  • Not Hot keeper
  • Sunderland’s Martin Fullop had little chance with six of the seven Chelsea goals but made a hash of one of them. Just for conceding so many he has to pick up the ‘Not Hot’ keeper award. The only other contender this week was Thomas Sorensen of Stoke. He made a bad error to allow Liverpool to score their goal in the 1-1 draw but he didn’t let in another six!

  • Hot defender
  • I’m not the greatest fan of Ashley Cole the person, from the very little I know of him. Anyone who reads his autobiography couldn’t fail to dislike him just a little bit! Having said that, at his best, he is as good as any left back in the world.

On saturday he was at his best and was a joy to watch. His goal was stunning and his performance all round matched the goal.

  • Not Hot defender
  • He was going to be one of the finest defenders England have ever produced. Unfortunately the career of Micah Richards has, at best stood still and at worst, gone considerably down hill. He still has the potential to be one of the best but he needs to sort himself out quickly.

Just what he was thinking when he so blatantly pulled the shirt of Everton’s Louis Saha only he will ever know.

  • Hot midfielder
  • Just a couple of weeks ago I named Everton’s Marouane Fellaini as the ‘Not Hot midfielder’ for 2009. I said he was vastly overrated, dirty and not worth the money David Moyes paid for him.

I haven’t been completely won over but I take my hat off to him, he was exceptional in the game against Manchester City. If he continues to play like that I shall have a huge amount of humble pie to eat.

  • Not Hot midfielder
  • Wigan’s Honduran midfielder Hendry Thomas does not look like someone you want to bump into in a dark alleyway at night. He has that look in his eyes that tells you he is not someone to be messed with.

He likes a tackle does Hendry! He could easily have seen red for the first two-footed lunge that saw him get booked. After that, only a mad man would put in the type of ridiculous ‘diving-in’ tackle that he did to receive his second yellow.

Wigan were 1-0 up and a man up against Wolves in their six-pointer when Thomas got sent off. He is very lucky he didn’t cost his side dear.

  • Hot striker
  • Can Chelsea survive without Didier Drogba? Nicolas Anelka laughed at that question on saturday as he scored two, could have had three more and was involved in several of the other goals.

He was unplayable and looks as though for the first time in his career he is actually enjoying playing.

  • Not Hot striker
  • I’m a fan of Aston Villa’s Gabby Agbonlahor but he seems to be struggling for form and confidence. He was pretty woeful in the 0-0 draw against West Ham and offered very little threat at all.
