PSG’s Maxwell ponders retirement

Paris Saint-Germain full-back Maxwell has surprisingly revealed that he plans to retire at the end of the current campaign.

The 33-year-old will be out of contract in the summer and with the Saints unlikely to offer him a new deal, chances are he will be leaving Parc des Princes.

However, while many expected him to play on for at least a couple more years, Maxwell has suggested that he is likely to end his playing career in a year’s time.

“As my contract will end at the end of next season, I started thinking about my future,” said Maxwell to O Globo.

“I am preparing to hang up my boots. Football always surprises us but I have to make a decision. I am ready and I will do the things as I have always done, professionally.”

Maxwell joined Paris Saint-Germain from Barcelona in January 2012 and has since managed 5 goals in 59 league appearances for the club.

He has been vying France international Lucas Digne for a starting berth and has started two of five league fixtures this season.

Maxwell surprisingly made Brazil World Cup squad this summer and featured in the 3-0 defeat to Netherlands in the third place play-off.
