Pulis calls for diving review

Stoke manager Tony Pulis has called for divers to be retrospectively punished after he felt decisions went against his side at Norwich.

Stoke fell to a 2-1 defeat at Carrow Road on Saturday and Pulis felt Robert Snodgrass went down easily to win a free-kick from which Norwich scored, adding that Charlie Adam was unfortunate to be booked by referee Andre Marriner for diving.

The 54-year-old has now suggested it would be beneficial to remove the responsibility for punishing divers from the referees, and leave appropriate sanctions to a panel after the games.

“I think the (diving) situation should be taken completely out of the hands of the referees and it should be retrospective on a Monday,” Pulis told reporters.

“There should be a panel which sits to decide whether a player has dived or not, that eases the pressure on referees and they only make that decision if they are 110 per cent certain someone has cheated.”

Pulis was particularly critical of the decision given against Andy Wilkinson, feeling Snodgrass went to ground with little contact.

“The goal was a disappointment. I have been in to see the referee to have a quick chat,” he said.

“I thought it certainly was not a free-kick, and the disappointing thing is when the lad (Snodgrass) falls, Andre and the linesman are so close to it.

“(Marriner) has booked Charlie in the first half for diving – I have just had a look at that and (Javier) Garrido pushes him in the back, so that is a double kick in the teeth when he gets both those decisions wrong and even worse when they score from it.

“Referees give the decisions they see on the day, and he has seen it differently to what we have. When he sees it again on the telly tonight, he will have a different opinion.”
