(GSM) – Atletico Madrid are top candidates for a spot in the first ever UEFA Europa League final following a 1-0 win over Liverpool in Thursday’s semi final.

The only goal of the match was scored after just nine minutes. Uruguayan Diego Forlan miscued a header but then managed to get the ball past keeper Jose Reina using his foot.

Apart from a chance for Steven Gerrard, who hit the side-net, the rest of the first half was rather uneventful.

The second half was balanced with Liverpool looking to equalise but the best chance was again for the Spaniards as a volley from Simao was stunningly saved by Reina.

Liverpool did come close later on as an Atletico defender only just managed to deflect a Gerrard cross before it would reach Ryan Babel at the far post.

As such, the 2005 European champions face a tough task when they host Atletico at Anfield on Thursday, April 29.
