Rakitić not getting a new Barca deal

According to Sport, Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has revealed the club will not be offering a new contract to Ivan Rakitić this season.

The Croatia international was a subject of strong interest from Paris Saint-Germain this summer, but in the end he decided to reject their advances and remain at Camp Nou. Having shown a high level of loyalty to the Catalans in the light of that interest, he revealed he was waiting for a call from Bartomeu in regards to a new contract with the club.

However, the president responded to his plea by saying that no such offer is forthcoming at the moment. He said it wasn’t possible for Barcelona at this particular moment to make the ‘gesture’ Rakitić had been looking for, and added that the situation will be looked into next season, providing the new revenue is at a level high enough. Barcelona have the highest wage bill in La Liga as it is.

It remains to be seen whether Bartomeu’s response will make the World Cup finalist reconsider his options come the next transfer window.
