Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos heaped praise on coach Jose Mourinho after Saturday’s 2-0 victory over city rivals Atletico Madrid.
The 26-year-old played the full 90 minutes as Real ran out winners, moving them to within five points of their second-placed rivals on the La Liga table.
Ramos was questioned about the appearance of the Portuguese coach on the pitch shortly before kick-off, when he welcomed fans to boo him if they so desired.
“He doesn’t come on the pitch with us,” he told the club’s website.
“We’re tasked with playing and doing our job. He’s the ideal coach for Madrid.”
A Cristiano Ronaldo free-kick and a 66th-minute strike from Mesut Oezil was enough to seal the win and the Spain international was delighted with their respective performances.
“Cristiano has worked consistently and we’re happy that he’s scored. It doesn’t surprise me because he’s scored from free-kicks like today’s in training,” Ramos said.
“He’s been criticised a lot lately and now is not the time to talk about it. Oezil prefers to make the final pass as opposed to scoring most of the time, but goals are what win matches.
“We’re happy because he scored and it’s a goal that makes the difference in the match.”
Ramos said the result was a big one for his side.
“We played a good, intelligent match. We are happy because in matches like these it doesn’t matter if you’re on a good or bad run,” he said.
“We knew we had to win three points and we were able to get ahead and control the game.”
