Rangers complete McAuley signing

Glasgow Rangers have confirmed the signing of Gareth McAuley for the rest of the season via their official website.

Manager Steven Gerrard revealed the deal was close on Monday morning and it was done a few hours later. The 38-year-old was released from contract with West Bromwich Albion following their relegation from the Premier League at the end of last season, and was therefore able to join the Scottish club as a free agent even after the transfer window had closed.

In their statement, Rangers have pointed out the experienced centre-back’s knack for scoring important goals, naming the winner for West Brom against Chelsea in 2012, as well as that his career-high in goals scored dates from the 2016/17 season when he found the opposition net eight times – an impressive number for a defender.

He also bagged the first goal Northern Ireland have scored in a tournament in 30 years when he netted against Ukraine at Euro 2016 in France.
