Rangers have suspended striker Francisco Sandaza pending an investigation into a hoax phone call.

Speaking to a person claiming to be an agent, Sandaza was tricked into revealing his salary at Ibrox Stadium as well as his future plans at Rangers and they were made public through various internet websites.

The 28-year-old, who signed from St Johnstone last off-season, has been suspended by the club as they investigate the hoax phone call which has been labelled ‘extremely serious’.

“Francisco Sandaza has been suspended by the club pending an investigation into comments made by the player in a recorded telephone conversation,” a club statement read.

“The club, Francisco and his agent have had discussions and manager Ally McCoist also spoke with the player, who did not take part in today’s training session.

“Francisco will not return to the club while the investigation is underway.

“Rangers regard this is an extremely serious issue but there will be no further comment until the inquiry, which could take a week, has been completed.”

Sandaza has previously been caught up in controversy for earning a 16-month driving ban at the end of last season after being caught driving more than double the speed limit and failing a breathalyser test.
