Reading goalkeeper Adam Federici is confident his side are moving in the right direction despite relegation looking likely.

Federici and his team-mates secured promotion to the English Premier League by winning the Championship last season, but find themselves bottom and 10 points adrift with just five games remaining this campaign.

Reading have picked up just one point since sacking Brian McDermott and replacing him with Nigel Adkins at the end of March.

But Federici suggested they are still adapting to the new manager’s style and will eventually improve as a club.

“These things take time, we are looking forward to challenge of changing the way we play and moving forward as a club,” the Australian told the club’s website.

“We’ll continue to work hard every day and I’m sure we will move forward. Every manager has their own philosophy – the manager wants to pass the ball and we’re looking forward to adapting to it.”

Federici, 28, refused to admit they have no chance of survival, but also indicated they can take heart from the campaign even if they do go down.

“We’re still looking forward – whatever happens will happen,” he said. “You want to take all the positives you can into next season,” he said.

“It’s good to be settled, we know what we’re doing. The work’s been great, everyone’s been enjoying it, we’ve got structure to the team and we’re all looking forward to the next game.”
