Real´s Karanka primed for season climax

Real Madrid assistant coach Aitor Karanka was delighted with his side’s 5-1 thumping of Levante on Saturday.

After a sluggish start, Real went a goal behind after 31 minutes when Michel scored for the visitors.

But the Spanish giants responded in terrific fashion, with goals from Gonzalo Higuain, Kaka, Cristiano Ronaldo and Mesut Oezil (two) firing them to an easy win.

And Karanka was pleased with the way his team fought back.

“The match has worked for our players as they will have gained some more rhythm and confidence,” he said.

“We were also able to rest some of our players from part of the game which should help and yet we still put in a very good performance.

“I think the match could have been settled in the first half but we were not able to score our third goal until the very end.

“We knew we had to put in a good defensive display because Levante are an experienced side who are able to take chances and if we had let them have chances they might have got a result.”

Karanka feels the win was ideal preparation for Real’s Champions League quarter-final second leg against Galatasaray, after their 3-0 win against the Turks at home on Wednesday.

“Right now are the decisive moments of the season for us and when everyone is in form we can demonstrate it on the pitch like we did last Wednesday against Galatasaray,” he said.

“We know we are out of the league but it gives us opportunities to try new things and to rest players.

“Gonzalo Higuain is also finding form at the right time, Mourinho already said that we don’t necessarily look at the statistics but to the whole work they do for the team.

“Our strikers are in good shape and when they score they show what they are capable of and they are making a difference.”
