Real learn from Lyon lesson

Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho is adamant there will be no room for complacency when his side take on Lyon in the Champions League.

Spanish giants Real lost 2-1 on aggregate to Lyon in the Champions League first knock-out round last season.

Real striker Karim Benzema revealed recently that several players thought they would progress with ease against the French side in 2010.

The two clubs are set to meet again at the same stage of the competition on Tuesday, but Mourinho insists his squad have no such illusions about a simple victory this time around.

“If we think that is going to be easy, we’ll find it very difficult, but we don’t think like that,” Mourinho said.

“If we think that we are going to finish them tomorrow, we’ll find it very difficult, but we don’t think that either.”

“If we think that some good periods during the game will be enough, we’ll find it difficult, but we don’t think that.”

“We know that it is important to play both games at our best, without thinking about the past, about statistics, about numbers.”

“We have to respect our opponents for who they are and for the quality that they have got, not for what they were last year or five years ago or a decade ago.”

“No, we have to think about the current Lyon team and think that we are ready. And we will be prepared.”

Mourinho revealed that Real will employ a relatively simple strategy as they go in search of their first quarter-final appearance in the competition since 2004.

“We want to score more goals than them,” he said.

“No, seriously, they are a difficult team to play, they know how to play in these kind of matches, but we are Real Madrid.”

“We won’t do anything different.”

“We know what we have to do to try to win this game, but I haven’t worked on the psychological aspect at all.”
