Real Madrid have confirmed that Gareth Bale has suffered a calf injury, making the Wales star likely to miss the Champions League clash with Paris Saint-Germain.

Bale was withdrawn at half-time of the weekend victory over Levante, though head coach Rafael Benitez stressed that the move was simply a precaution following his involvement in the international break.

However, the club have now confirmed a problem to his left calf which is set to keep him out of Wednesday’s game against the French champions at the Parc des Princes.

“Following medical tests on Gareth Bale, he has been diagnosed with an injury to the soleus muscle of his left leg. His condition will be monitored,” a statement on Monday read.

Bale was forced to sit out the previous Champions League clash with Malmo on September 30 as a result of a similar injury which saw him miss four matches, though early speculation in Spain suggests he will be fit for the trip to Celta Vigo on Saturday.

The former Tottenham star has contributed two goals and four assists in all competitions so far this season.
