Real Madrid pair interest Premier League duo

Real Madrid playmaker Luka Modric is being linked with a move to Manchester United

Real Madrid playmaker Luka Modric is being linked with a move to Manchester United

Real Madrid could be involved in a very expensive transfer merry-go-round this summer, if reports in the Times and the Daily Mirror are accurate.

The Times are reporting that Manchester United boss David Moyes has turned his attention to Real Madrid playmaker Luka Modric, in the search for a new central midfielder.

The Daily Mirror claims that Modric’s Real Madrid teammate Sami Khedira is a transfer target for Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho.

Funds

If these reports are true, could it be that Real Madrid are raising extra funds to purchase a certain Gareth Bale from Tottenham? I doubt very much that Real have to sell to buy Bale, but it would certainly balance the books slightly at the Bernabeu selling two valuable players.

The Mirror are also reporting that Gareth Bale is seeking talks with Tottenham over their refusal to listen to bids from Real Madrid for his services. The Spanish giants are believed to have had a world-record bid of £85million turned down by Spurs chairman Daniel Levy.

However, if Bale does want to leave the club, which is looking increasingly likely, then Levy may have to reconsider his options.

Modric

Anyway, back to Luka Modric. David Moyes sees the Croatian playmaker as an alternative option to Barcelona’s Cesc Fabregas, after the Red Devils latest bid for the former-Arsenal captain was rejected.

New Barcelona boss Gerardo Martino has stated Fabregas will be staying with the Spanish champions and no bids will be considered for the midfielder.

United still need to strengthen their options in the centre of the midfield and it now looks like Moyes will turn his attention to Modric. The former-Tottenham star was also linked with a move to United prior to moving to Real Madrid.

However, Los Blancos won the race for his signature and Modric moved to the Bernabeu. The 27-year-old has not exactly cemented a regular place in the Real first team in his time in the Spanish capital, ironically largely due to Sami Khedira’s presence in the Real squad.

The opportunity of first team football at Old Trafford could tempt the midfielder back to the Premier League. His creativity and vision would give United an extra dimension in the middle of the park. It seems that Modric looks to be the best available option for David Moyes.

Khedira

Sami Khedira is a far different player to Modric. His style of play is all about his physicality. The German international started his career as an attacking midfielder, but in recent years has played a more defensive role for both club and country.

Khedira is the perfect player for a box-to-box role though. If he does move to Chelsea, I could see him occupying the anchor role in midfield. The Blues have struggled to find the perfect defensive midfielder since Claude Makelele vacated the role in Mourinho’s first spell in charge of the Blues.

John Obi Mikel has played in the role a lot over the past few seasons, but he is yet to convince that he is good enough for Chelsea. Brazilian centre-back David Luiz also played the role under Rafa Benitez last season and did a decent job.

However, it seems that is one of the Blues weak positions at the moment. The Mirror are also reporting that Mourinho is chasing Roma stalwart Daniele de Rossi, but the Italian is linked with a move to England every time a transfer window opens.

Khedira would definitely be a good addition to the Chelsea midfield. I think he has the discipline to be the foil for the likes of Juan Mata, Eden Hazard, and Oscar to do their stuff further up the field. If I were a Chelsea fan, I would prefer Khedira to Mikel, who always strikes me as pedestrian.

Triangle

Real Madrid could be soon be at the centre of one of the most interesting transfer triangles of the summer. They could buy one of the Premier Leagues leading lights, but then export too very good players back to England.

One thing that is for sure is that it is never dull in the Spanish capital when it comes to transfers, I am sure Los Blancos fans would not have it any other way.

Will Modric and Khedira be heading to the Premier League this summer?

Why doesn’t Moyes move Rooney to mid, he’s there half the time anyway and look at the assist he has with Ronaldo and VP
