After being clearly defeated by Barcelona, Real Madrid knew that La Liga was lost. The last chance of wining the title was gone. The game against Valencia showed that Real is no longer thinking about this season, losing 3-0 and barely trying to run or fight to win the game.
After this defeat, Barcelona will certainly be the champion of Primera Division although a draw with Villarreal yesterday means it is still mathematically possible for Real to catch them.
Bad year
During this bad year, where “los merengues†suffered humiliating defeats such as the 4-0 at Anfield Road against Liverpool or the 2-6 against Barcelona, at El Santiago Bernabeu it is pretty reasonable to think that the Spanish giants want to forget it as soon as possible and try to concentrate on the future.
The forthcoming elections for president that most likely will bring Florentino Pérez back has got to mean a total change where Real must recover all the lost prestige over the last seasons, especially in Europe where they have not been in a final in the past 7 years.
Best players
Florentino could probably be the person Real needs. He is remembered as the man who brought some of the best players in the world to “la casa blanca†such as Figo, Beckham, Ronaldo and Zidane.
On his comeback some names have been sounding to join Real Madrid to recover the “galacticos†era. Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka, Cesc Fabregas or Xabi Alonso could be joining the Santiago Bernabeu this summer. However, is this what Real Madrid needs?.
Expectations
Do they just need a few stars instead of building a team?, we can’t forget how even though Florentino won a lot of titles with “los Blancosâ€Â, he hurried to leave the club 3 years ago when the team didn’t achieve the expectations. Despite that, the fans want Florentino back to heal this harmed team and for that, besides buying some great players, selling some is a must. Some of the possible players that could be leaving the Spanish capital are Saviola, Van der Vaart, Faubert, Drenthe, or Cannavaro who already has an agreement to go back to Juventus.
Will this change be what Real needs to recover all the prestige and to win a lot of titles in the near future?. Will Florentino Pérez be Madrid’s messiah?
Only time can tell.
Daniel Tojo.
