Real Madrid’s Argentine winger Angel di Maria, signed from Benfica in June, said he expects to play a more attacking role at his new club than with the Portuguese giants.

“I think that here I’ll play a bit more up front, something different from what I did at Benfica, but I’ll get used to the new position,” he said in an interview with the Spanish sports daily Marca published Sunday.

“I always like to go forward, to take risks. I’m not afraid of anything and that’s what brought me here.”

Di Maria, 22, became Jose Mourinho’s first signing as new Real Madrid coach when he was bought for a reported fee of 25 million euros from Benfica in June.

A versatile left-winger, he was named the best player of the Portuguese league last season after helping the club to the league and cup double.

He played for Argentina at the World Cup finals in June, where he played on the left side of a central midfield three.

He told Marca he hopes to be a first-team regular at Real, although Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo “will continue to be number one.”

Mourinho “made it clear that if you work hard, then you’ll play. What he tells us all is that we train to the maximum,” he said.

“I’m happy to here, surrounded by the best players and under a great coach. It’s what I always dreamed of.”

Real, who are holding a pre-season camp in the United States, beat the Los Angeles Galaxy 3-2 on Saturday.
