Redknapp targets top spot

Tottenham’s qualification for the Champions League last 16 is not enough for Harry Redknapp – he wants the north Londoners to win their group.

Spurs secured their place in the knockout stages with a 3-0 win over Werder Bremen at White Hart Lane on Wednesday, and can ensure top spot in Group A with victory over Twente in the Netherlands in two weeks.

“It is fantastic for us to get through, that was a difficult group when it was drawn although it didn’t look it tonight. I think they lost a little bit of heart,” Tottenham manager Redknapp said.

“We want to win it (the group), you want that top spot if you can get it.”

“It looks as though most big teams will finish top of their group so it’s important if you can finish top.”

Goals from Younes Kaboul, Luka Modric and Peter Crouch gave Tottenham the win, although winger Gareth Bale wasted a chance to add to the goal tally after missing a second-half penalty.

The loss was Bremen’s sixth in their last seven matches and marked their fifth consecutive game without scoring, leaving them bottom of Group A with not even a Europa League spot to play for in the last game.

But coach Thomas Schaaf is convinced his side is capable of turning things around.

“There were some positive things, but we still make too many mistakes at the back,” Schaaf said.

“We should not pick out any individuals when we come to the result, because we made too many errors as a team.”

“We have to try to get out of this situation. We are still certain we have a team that is capable of playing better football.”
