The Republic of Ireland recovered from Friday’s Euro 2016 defeat to Scotland with a spirited performance against USA at the Aviva Stadium, edging out the visitors thanks to goals from Anthony Pilkington, James McClean, and two from Robbie Brady.
Debutants Cyrus Christie and David McGoldrick impressed as Ireland boss Martin O’Neill fielded a completely different starting XI from that in Glasgow. Ireland took the lead early on when Pilkington latched on to McGoldrick’s pass, but saw a mistake from David Meyler allow USA to equalise through Mix Diskerud.
Ipswich Town striker McGoldrick was again involved in the second-half, playing in Brady who broke the offside trap to put the ball past goalkeeper Bill Hamid. The introduction of Shane Long gave Ireland extra pace, and this was used to great effect in the build-up to James McClean’s goal before Brady sealed the win with a well-taken free-kick.
