Revenge no motivation for Roar

The Brisbane Roar are fighting fit and brimming with confidence after recording consecutive victories, coach Mike Mulvey says.

The Roar accounted for Adelaide United 1-0 away on December 26 before returning to Suncorp Stadium on New Year’s Day to see off Wellington Phoenix 2-1 to put their season back on track.

Mulvey, whose team face Melbourne Heart on Sunday, said his side’s 4-1 loss to John Aloisi’s men in round six would not factor into his players’ thinking.

“I’m not a revenge type of person,” Mulvey said.

“I think it’s game to game. On that particular day Melbourne Heart just proved too good for Roar, and we’ll see what happens this time around.

“The essence of this week is recovery. Australian players aren’t used to playing two games within a week, or even three within a week.

“But there’s a definite spark in them, there’s no doubt about that.”

The Roar coach said he had noted an improvement across the whole team, with defensive players working harder to lay a platform for the attacking stars to produce their best.

“You can see it in players’ performances. There’s a bounce in the step of certain players. I’ll leave you to be the judges of who it is, but I’m happy across the board. I think we’ve picked it up a notch,” Mulvey said.

“You just instil some self-belief that was maybe lacking a bit. There are good players here. We’ve got artists like Thomas (Broich) and Mitch (Nichols) who can pick a pass and can create something out of nothing.

“They’re benefitting from the fact that the guys at the back are really working hard and squeezing the space a lot more, so overall everything’s good. Michael (Theo)’s keeping us in the game when he needs to and I think we’re in a good place at the moment.”

Brisbane’s squad is in good health, according to Mulvey, which he pointed out was another cause for optimism.

“We’ve got the fittest squad in the league. I’ve got a very high level of confidence in the players’ ability to run out 90 minutes,” he said.

“And I think that’s probably a big plus for us going into this period.

“There’s been one or two players from different teams I’ve seen pulling up sore with hamstrings or pulled muscles. We’re very fortunate in that regard, we’ve got excellent staff here and the team is very well prepared in that regard.”
