For the first time in history, River Plate finished last in the Argentinian Primera Division. At Estudiantes De La Plata, River only managed a 1-1 draw.

Both sides had something at stake in this game as Estudiantes needed a win to qualify for a Copa Libertadores berth while River hoped to leave the bottom spot on the final day of the Apertura tournament.

Tuzzio put River in the lead after 55 minutes but Boselli equalised 14 minutes later and 1-1 would also turn out to be the final score.

Estudiantes playmaker Juan Sebastian Veron was sent off with eight minutes to play.

River prove that one season can be very different from the other, as the Buenos Aires outfit won last season’s Clausura. By doing so, they do get access to the 2009 Copa Libertadores.
