Robben hammers the Netherlands´ Euro nightmare

Arjen Robben has lashed out at the Netherlands’ disastrous Euro 2012 campaign, hinting at unrest behind the scenes.

Pre-tournament favourites the Netherlands bowed out at the group stages of the European Championships in Poland and Ukraine, just two years after reaching the World Cup final.

The early exit led the departure of coach Bert van Marwijk, with divisions in the notoriously fractious Netherlands dressing room rumoured to be a cause of the team’s poor performance.

“The Euros were a complete disaster, just one big drama – worthless,” Bayern Munich winger Robben told De Telegraaf.

“Too many things happened that prevented us from having a good tournament. We will have to talk about the things that happened. We have to look forward, but we must not forget what happened, and where it went wrong in June.”

When asked what exactly went wrong in Poland and Ukraine, Robben was not clear: “I don’t want to give away details, but it’s clear that we need to talk with each other.”

The Netherlands play their first match since Euro 2012 in a friendly against Belgium on Wednesday.
