Rodgers confident of success

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers insists he has the experience required to be successful with the Anfield club.

The former Swansea boss was officially unveiled at Anfield on a three-year deal by owner John Henry after guiding the Premier League new boys to 11th place in their debut season in the top flight.

Despite enduring mixed fortunes with Watford and Reading earlier in his managerial career, Rodgers, 39, is confident he can make the step up.

“My pathway as a young coach and manager has been different to most,” he said at the press conference on Friday.

“Even though I’m young in age, I’ve actually been coaching and working in football nearly 20 years.

“Obviously I had four-and-a-half fantastic years at Chelsea Football Club where I had the experience of working with big players.

“Looking at Kenny Dalglish – he was the manager here at 34 and he resigned at 39 and in that period he won three leagues and two FA Cups.

“I arrive here at 39, maybe young in age, but with experience in terms of the game.

“Footballers are footballers. They want to learn, they want to be educated and they want to improve and that’s something that I’ve done with all types of players, young and senior through my career.”

Despite insisting he was happy at the Liberty Stadium, Rodgers said the opportunity to manage Liverpool was simply too good to turn down.

“I’d spoken to the chairman at Swansea and I’ve always said that if I left Swansea City it would be for a top club but I would have to be that number one choice,” Rodgers said.

“I was happy at Swansea, I wasn’t trying to leave. But obviously when Liverpool came back in for me the second time and said I was the number one choice then obviously you have to think seriously about it.

“I spoke to the chairman, Huw Jenkins, who’s a fantastic man – we’ve got a close working relationship and a close personal relationship and he obviously gave me permission to speak (to Liverpool).

“And once I found out I was the number one target from the important people at Liverpool, then it was quite an easy decision.”
