Rodgers: Liverpool will make marquee signings this summer

Liverpool F.C. manager Brendan Rodgers has insisted the club owners will bring in marquee players when the transfer window re-opens in the summer.

Liverpool F.C. manager Brendan Rodgers has insisted the club owners will bring in marquee players when the transfer window re-opens in the summer.

The Reds (17-7-10), currently in fifth-place in the English Premier League table, are seven points behind rivals Manchester United for the final UEFA Champions League qualifying place following their disappointing 1-0 loss to Hull City on Tuesday.

In addition, a place in next season’s UEFA Europa League is also far from guaranteed for Liverpool, with Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur also in the running for European football.

Consequently, Rodgers is under increasing pressure, but the manager has hinted the loss of Luis Suarez and injuries to Daniel Sturridge have contributed tothe Merseyside club’s disappointing season.

“You can’t hide the fact we’ve lost over 50 goals,” Rodgers said. “Even with those players we weren’t tipped to get in the top four and we haven’t got those players now. We have to work with what we’ve got.

“Now we have to look to improve the squad and it’s always great if you can get marquee players to come in and help you. The owners will support that.

“Everyday you come into work at Liverpool you are working for your future.”

Rodgers added: “We want to be in the top four, but that was always going to be difficult because we were playing catch up for a lot of the season.

“We lost a couple of big games which dented our confidence a bit. I need to build a team that can get through the rough waters as well. We need a team that can get through the smooth and the rough.

“That will be my challenge – to rebuild a group that can get through the rough waters.”

Meanwhile, in other news, Liverpool right-back Glen Johnson has revealed he expects to seek pastures new in the summer.

“I would have thought so – I haven’t got a contract,” Johnson said.

“We’ll have to wait and see.

“I don’t think so but we have to wait and see.”

Aurier signs for PSG

French Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain have completed the permanent signing of Serge Aurier from Toulouse until 2019.

Aurier, 22, has tallied three assists in 12 league appearances for PSG this term, and could step in as the club’s first-choice right-back in 2015/16 amid ongoing reports linking Gregory van der Wiel with a summer move to Southampton.

“Paris Saint-Germain is happy to announce it has triggered the option-to-buy clause for Serge Aurier,” read a state issued by the French champions.

“The Ivory Coast international has signed a contract with the club until June 2019.”
