Rogic staying grounded

Teen sensation Tom Rogic says he will not let the hype of his shock Australia call-up go to his head.

Rogic’s selection in the Socceroos’ 19-man squad for next week’s friendly against South Korea is a fitting reward for his stunning start to the A-League season with the Mariners.

Despite having only 18 A-League games under his belt, the 19-year-old’s potential and ability has attracted plenty of excitement and hype from the media.

Socceroos boss Holger Osieck said he feared Rogic’s career could be ‘destroyed’ if the media and Australian public overhyped his talent but Rogic knows he must remain grounded.

“It’s hard. I try not to take too much notice of the media,” the classy attacking midfielder said on Wednesday.

“In the environment I’m in – under Graham Arnold and the players around me – it’s definitely helped keep my feet grounded.

“I know I’ve got a lot of things to work on in my game.

“I’m trying to learn each day and develop as a player.”

Rogic is one of two Mariners to make the squad – alongside goalkeeper Mat Ryan – and praised the influence of coach Arnold for his progression.

“Since I’ve come to the club I’ve learnt a lot from Arnie and the rest of the coaching staff,” he said.

“I’m in good hands here and the players around me, I wouldn’t be in this position without them.

“I didn’t expect it and for it to happen is just a little bit overwhelming.

“But I’m very grateful and can’t wait to get started.”

Asked if he believes this selection could lead to him being a permanent fixture in future, Rogic said: “I’m not getting carried away.

“I’m very humbled and honoured to be a part of the squad, to talk about any game time would just be a bonus.

“I’m going over there too hopefully learn a lot in my short time there.”
