Romário has announced his retirement aged 42, saying: “My time is up. Everything has been a lot of fun.” Romário, who claimed to have scored more than 1,000 goals during his career, hit 56 in 73 games for Brazil between 1987 and 2005 – including five in his country's triumphant 1994 FIFA World Cup campaign.
He started and finished his playing days with CR Vasco da Gama, also appearing for CR Flamengo, Fluminense FC, FC Barcelona, PSV Eindhoven and Valencia CF.
