Ronaldo denying putting himself in Spanish shop window

Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo on Tuesday denied he would be using Wednesday’s Champions League final here against Barcelona to try to impress suitors in the Spanish La Liga.

Ronaldo was involved in a protracted transfer tug-of-war between United and Real Madrid last summer having publicly admitted he wanted to join the then Spanish champions.

And recent press reports in Spain claimed once again that he would be leaving the current Champions League holders for Madrid at the end of this season.

But the Portugal wing wonder said he was happy at United and brushed off any suggestion that he would be hoping to get used to playing in white shirts – Real’s colours and those that United will wear against Barca on Wednesday.

“If we’re playing in white that’s ok for me. I like the Spanish league but I feel good in England and in the Premier League which I believe right now is the strongest,” he said in fluent Spainsh.

A lot of talk in the build up to the match has been surrounding the personal battle between Ronaldo and Barca’s Lionel Messi to see not only which is the best team but who is the best player in the world.

But Ronaldo insisted that sideshow is not one that concerns him.

“If we win then definitely one of our players will have more chance (to be named world player of the year). Some players in my team have played fantastically this season and they deserve to win it,” he said.

“But right now I couldn’t care about that, what I want more is to win the Champions League.

“Barcelona do have a great team and we respect them but I believe Manchester are the best and we’ll show it tomorrow.”

Despite having seen Chelsea shut out Barca for 180 minutes – but not quite stoppage time at the end of the second leg – Ronaldo’s team-mate centre-back Rio Ferdinand insists that is not the way his club should approach the game.

“There’s pros and cons to the way Chelsea played. Obviously they were unfortunate to lose so late but I thought the way they played was similar to the way they played at the Nou Camp (defensively),” he said.

“On our part defending so deep against a quality side is dangerous because the nearer they are to your goal the easier it is for them to score.

“We’ve proved we can defend deep and hit on the break or we can defend higher up. That’s our strength, we can alter our game to different teams.”

Ferdinand was a major injury doubt for United in the lead up to this game but he insists he is now fit and ready to help his team.

But even with United one win away from making history as the first team to win back to back titles since the European Cup became the Champions League, he is not concerned about any legacy making.

“My injury is fine, I’ve been training over the last couple of days with the team, I feel good and I’m glad to be back,” he added.

“In terms of back to back titles, we need to achieve that, that’s what we’re here to do but until you do that I don’t know where it puts you in terms of the past.

“We have to win it and then you guys (the press) can determine where it puts us in history. We’ve just got to go out and win it, it’s a big trophy.”
