Zinedine Zidane has rejected suggestions Cristiano Ronaldo appeared unhappy prior to getting on the scoresheet during Real Madrid’s 6-1 win at Real Betis on Saturday.
The star forward netted his second goal of the LaLiga season in the big win at Estadio Benito Villamarin, having worked his way back to full fitness following the knee injury he suffered in the final of Euro 2016.
The Portuguese had to wait until the 78th minute to get in on the action as the visitors ran rampant in Seville, but Zidane insisted there was no problem with striker’s attitude.
“Cristiano Ronaldo didn’t look anxious,” he said.
“He always wants to score and that is normal. The most important thing is that he was focused and transmitted positive energy towards the others. I am happy that he got a goal.”
Ronaldo was one of five different players to find the back of the net, with Isco grabbing a brace and Raphael Varane, Karim Benzema and Marcelo also scoring, prompting Zidane to welcome the contributions from different areas of the team.
“That is not just something from today,” he said.
“It has happened in previous games. We are lucky to have important players in every position and they show that in every game, even with set pieces, which is very important these days.
“I’ve got good players, they’re intelligent. They knew we had to start strongly and they did that superbly.
“It’s a reference point. It’s not easy to play like that away from home.”
The head coach reserved special praise for the efforts of Isco and the versatility of substitute Lucas Vazquez.
“He [Isco] played very well today and I’m happy with his goals and his work rate, because he worked very hard,” Zidane said.
“When Lucas Vazquez came on we played with three in the middle. It is not his ideal position but all of the players are capable of playing in different positions and Lucas can do that with ease.”
The fourth goal, a brilliant counterattack that started with a Real Betis corner, was arguably the best of the match and gave considerable satisfaction to Zidane.
“For those who like football, myself included, it is a great attractive thing to see us do what we need to do so quickly, in transition, and with so few touches,” he said.
“I am going to watch it all back and enjoy it.”
