Cristiano Ronaldo believes it would take a miracle for Real Madrid to overhaul Barcelona’s lead in La Liga.

Real are 13 points behind the Catalans despite a 5-1 win over Levante on Saturday, which saw Ronaldo score his 29th league goal of the season.

Speaking to reporters after the game, the Portuguese forward refused to completely give up hope when asked about Real’s title defence but conceded it was highly unlikely.

“I do not believe in miracles,” the 28-year-old replied when asked about chasing down Barca.

“It may be possible but it is very difficult, almost impossible. Yes, you have to win to gain confidence for the Champions League and winning trophies always gives you confidence – this is the thought we must always hold on to.

“It’s not about me – what matters is Real Madrid and continuing to win. Scoring goals is important but my priority is to help the team and that’s my job. The team was playing well, I went on in the second half and tried to help with a goal and an assist.”

The former Manchester United winger also spoke about Real’s Champions League ambitions with the capital club on the verge of the semi-finals after a 3-0 win in last Wednesday’s quarter-final first leg against Galatasaray.

“The tie against Galatasaray is not decided,” he added. “We have a good advantage, and we will fight.

“I do not know if we are favourites to win the Champions League and I do not like to talk about it either. But I think we do have a good chance of reaching the final.”
