Ronaldo hoping to win Ballon d´Or

SoccerNews in La Liga 6 Jan 2013

Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo has revealed he would love to win the Ballon d’Or.

The award for the best footballer in the world will be announced in Zurich on Monday and Ronaldo is hoping to go one better after finishing runner-up to Lionel Messi last year.

“Honestly, I will answer this question in a sincere way,” he said.

“You don’t know me but some other people do and they know how honest I am.

“Ok, I would love to win the Ballon d’Or, I won’t lie.”

Ronaldo previously won the award in 2008, but since it merged with the FIFA World Player of the Year award, Messi has won the past two years.

The Portuguese superstar helped Real win last year’s La Liga title with 46 goals and became the first player to score against all 19 league rivals in a single season.

Former manager, Sir Alex Ferguson of Manchester United, recognised what he once had at his club.

“He’s an unbelievable player. We have a pantheon of great players and Ronaldo definitely compares with any of them,” he said.

“Although he had a natural talent, he is in many ways manufactured himself – he practised and practised. He had a bit of the Eric Cantona about him in that way.”

Ronaldo will be wearing new boots for the La Liga game against Real Sociedad later which are embossed with his remarkable achievements over last year.

He may have to find room for another statistic if he takes home the top award on Monday.
