Wayne Rooney says he is feeling physically strong after scoring on his return to Manchester United’s starting line-up in a 2-0 Premier League win at Burnley on Sunday.

Rooney had not featured in the first XI since March 4 due to an ankle injury, but was recalled by Jose Mourinho following a serious knee injury sustained by Zlatan Ibrahimovic against Anderlecht in the Europa League, with Marcos Rojo hurt in the same game.

Anthony Martial gave United the lead and Rooney poked a rebound home from close range to extend their unbeaten run to 23 league games, narrowing the gap to rivals Manchester City – who are next up on Thursday – to a single point.

Rooney accepted progressing to the semi-finals of the Europa League came at a cost due to Rojo and Ibrahimovic’s injuries, but the United captain was glad to be back in action, completing 90 minutes for his side.

“It was a high getting to the semi-final in Europe but it was a blow to lose Marcos and Zlatan,” Rooney told Sky Sports.

“The lads who have come in have given the manager something to think about. We’ve both scored. It’s great to have options. It sets up a big game on Thursday.

“It’s always great to be on the scoresheet. I’ve had injuries off the bench which has been frustrating but I feel strong now.”

The Manchester derby looks set to be pivotal for the Champions League hopes of both City and United, with Rooney adding: “It’s two great teams and it’s massive for City.

“There’s a fight for the top four and we’re both in the fight. We’ll be ready.”
