Roy Keane slams FAI

Roy Keane has denounced FAI’s request for a rematch and believes Ireland have only themselves to blame for their failure to qualify for the World Cup finals.

The Republic’s appeal to FIFA after their 2-1 aggregate defeat by France was rejected on basis of game laws, thereby denying Irish another chance to make it to South Africa 2010.

Ipswich boss, Keane agrees that Coach Giovanni Trapattoni, his players and the nation’s fans deserved a better result; however, his sympathies do not extend to the FAI. Recalling his controversial walk-out from Ireland prior to 2002 World Cup, especially his clash with chief executive John Delaney, he said in a callous manner “What goes around comes around.”

“I’ve been amazed by the commotion over the past few days. I think of course Henry handled it but I’d focus on why they (Ireland players) didn’t clear it,” Keane told the press.

“I’d be more annoyed with my goalkeeper and defenders than Thierry Henry. How can you let a ball bounce in the six yard box? How can you let Henry get goal-side of you? If the ball bounces in the six yard bounce I’d be saying ‘where the hell is my goalkeeper?’”

“You look over the course of the campaign and Ireland had the chances over two games, but they never took them.

He said: “They can complain all they want but France are going to the World Cup – get over it.
