Ruben Semedo confirms Villarreal move

The 23-year-old Sporting CP star Ruben Semedo has been the subject of intense speculation over the past couple of weeks.

The in-demand defender has been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League sides Newcastle United and Southampton is recent weeks.

Rafa Benitez was considered to be huge favourite to land Ruben Semedo, but the player himself has confirmed on Tuesday that he will be moving to La Liga outlet Villarreal.

“Villarreal have an interesting project and that is what I need right now. I welcome the opportunity to play in the Spanish league.”, Ruben Semedo was quoted by the Portuguese media outlet Record.

Villarreal and Sporting CP have agreed on a €14 million transfer, whereas the player will put pen to paper on a 5-year deal with the Yellow Submarine.

Semedo took part in Sporting CP’s 24 competitive fixtures, helping his team to a third-place finish in the Primeira Liga, behind Porto and champions Benfica.
