Rubin Kazan full-back Cristian Daniel Ansaldi has admitted that he could have joined Benfica last summer.

The Argentine defender has just over a year left on his deal in Russia and has already informed clubs chiefs that he wants to leave in the summer.

Rubin Kazan are unlikely to stand in his way in case of a good offer, and Ansaldi reveals that he was close to joining Benfica in the summer.

“My agents were in contact with the people who make decisions in Lisbon,” Ansaldi confirmed to Izvestia.

“And, according to my representatives, Benfica were prepared to offer Rubin decent compensation and good financial conditions to me.”

The deal ultimately failed to materialize as the two clubs could not agree a transfer fee, but it is almost certain that Ansaldi will be leaving Rubin after all.

Clubs from Spain, Italy, Germany and Portugal are reportedly keeping close tabs on the highly rated defender.

The 26-year-old, who has 3 Argentina caps to his name, has made a total of 117 Russian Premier League appearances for Rubin, and scored 2 goals in the process.
