Borussia Dortmund have confirmed the return of Nuri Sahin on an 18-month loan deal from La Liga giants Real Madrid.

Sahin initially joined Liverpool on a season-long loan but after limited opportunities the Turkish international midfielder has cut short the deal so he can link up with his boyhood club, where he won the 2010/11 Bundesliga title.

Dortmund also have an option to make the deal permanent at the end of the loan period.

The 24-year-old departs Liverpool after a total of just 12 games, with his last Premier League appearance coming in the side’s 1-1 draw at Chelsea on November 11.

Speaking at the player’s unveiling, club director Hans-Joachim Watzke claimed that they were always interested in bringing the player back to the club.

“Back then, we told Real to give us a sign if it was possible to bring Nuri back,” he revealed.

“We have taken Nuri on loan for 18 months. He left no doubt about the fact that he wanted to play here again.

“He is here for 18 months, and regarding the option to buy him, we’re in the driving seat.”

Sahin is relishing his return to Signal Iduna Park and believes his time abroad has served him well despite a lack of playing time.

“I realised that as a footballer and a human being, I belong here 100 per cent,” the midfielder said.

“Talks with Dortmund started a week ago. Then, two days ago, we got the signal (from Madrid).

“I want to help the team. I am still able to play football. I noticed quickly that I only want to play for Dortmund. I am a better player now, even though I didn’t get much playing time.”

Sahin signed a six-year deal with Real Madrid ahead of the 2011/12 season but failed to make his mark in the Spanish capital, making just four La Liga appearances in the club’s championship-winning season.

After a difficult debut season under manager Jose Mourinho, Sahin left for Premier League outfit Liverpool but was unable to recapture his best form.
