Dutchman Jan Poortvliet on Friday resigned as manager of Southampton following poor results this season, leaving them second from bottom in the second-tier English Championship.

He leaves the job immediately after just eight months in the post in the aftermath of Saints’ defeat to Doncaster at the weekend.

The 53-year-old, who played at the 1978 World Cup, had been in charge at St Mary’s since taking over from Nigel Pearson last May.

Academy director Mark Wotte has taken over as coach.
