Greece striker Georgios Samaras says it would be a ‘dream’ to beat Germany in the quarter-finals on Friday.

But the 27-year-old Celtic striker has played down comparisons to his country’s Euro 2004 winning-squad.

Germany are one of the favourites for this Henri Delaunay trophy but Samaras isn’t fazed by their opponents in the last eight, saying they’ll need to beat the best if they’re to win the tournament.

Samaras also added that the team will be playing for the Greek people, following the country’s recent financial struggles.

“You know we are 22 players – the coaching staff, the medical staff, everyone. We don’t play for ourselves and we don’t play for the team,” Samaras said.

“We play for the country and the 11 million people in Greece who are waiting for a smile and something to celebrate, and I think we did that with the game against Russia and we’re happy.”

Samaras said he did not care who Greece’s opponents were from now on.

“The point we’re at, you can’t choose a team. We’re in the best eight best countries in Europe and we have reached our target, our realistic target, and from now on we don’t care who we play.

“We just want to enjoy it and you never know what will happen. If we go through then it would be a dream but you cannot compare this team with what the 2004 team achieved.”
