Sammer: Robben will stay at Bayern
Arjen Robben will not leave Bayern Munich in the off-season, the club’s sporting director Matthias Sammer has insisted.
The Netherlands international was influential in the Allianz Arena outfit’s historic treble-winning campaign, scoring the winning goal in their 2-1 UEFA Champions League final victory over Borussia Dortmund.
Robben’s future had been in doubt earlier in the season after injuries and a loss of form saw him lose his place in the starting line-up.
But the Dutchman enjoyed a fine end to 2012-13 after forcing his way back into the team, and ex-Germany
international Sammer says Bayern have no intention of letting him leave.
“The truth is, he still has a two-year contract, next season he will continue playing for us,” Sammer told Voetbal International.
“I read a lot of nonsense stories. Arjen has long lacked the recognition (given to other) creative players like Franck Ribery.
“For his career, winning the Champions League has been very important, I know it from experience. The Bavarians owe their Champions League victory to Arjen Robben.”
Sammer also rubbished suggestions Bayern will struggle to find motivation next season, and urged the team to maintain their focus under incoming manager Pep Guardiola.
“The pressure is on every top team, it is no different (at Bayern) of course, we have won absolutely everything and want to continue to belong to the top European (teams). We have to stay hungry,” he said.
